Lincoln University amenity area - conifers

Abstract

Gymnosperms, more commonly referred to as conifers were first planted in the Amenity area in 1990. They were part of a collection of plants that were planted as a teaching aid for the Diploma in Parks and Garden Technology students after an extra block of land became available. The Amenity area is part of the Hort. Research area and at that time my involvement in developing this area was encouraged by Professor Rowe, the then head of the Department of Horticulture, Landscape and Parks. Conifers were sourced from a range of places, some grown by cuttings obtained by myself and others from various sources, some through the Grounds department and others by donation by friends and colleagues as well as from the City Council nursery, the Christchurch Botanic Gardens and the old DSIR nursery. A number of people assisted me over this time, especially Richard Poole, Pamela Gibbons, Merv Spurway and Brent Richards, the latter, mainly through the use of the nursery propagating facilities. I have put the source of the plants and date planted where I have records, much of that information is on a data base of campus plants that I spent considerable time developing over many years.
