Abstract
The role of financial incentives (and in particular rating relief) as policy instruments for encouraging the conservation of the landscape is considered. The usefulness of such policy tools is assessed and other ways of conserving the landscape reviewed. Particular attention is paid to the contribution economics can make to the conservation process.
