The United States of America is a large and important market for wool, and it is a market which relies heavily on imported supplies of wool. The future behaviour of this market is therefore of considerable consequence to those countries which produce wool for export and to which these exports are an important source of foreign exchange. A study which contributes to an understanding of the factors which determine the demand for wool in this market is therefore of value in that an appreciation of these factors and their effect on U.S. wool consumption may provide a means of estimating future trends, in this consumption. An analysis of the U.S. demand for carpet wool is of considerable practical value to New Zealand in that the determination of the factors which affect the U.S. demand for carpet wool may indicate not only the likely future scope of this market, but also the means or exploiting this future market to the fullest possible extent for New Zealand wools. The planning and execution of this thesis is therefore carried out with the practical value of its results largely born in mind and not with the intention of using this situation as an example of' how such a problem may be analysed.en
