Abstract
This report details the development and testing of a game to demonstrate certain concepts related to New Zealand's human carrying capacity. Principally, the game seeks to show that if the population rises above a particular level, the quality of life will deteriorate. Initially, games are considered in general, with particular reference to the use of games for motivating learners and demonstrating simultaneous interactions, resource allocation and conflict resolution. Several examples of successful games are included. The project game is described. It is shown to incorporate a population-related deterioration in the quality of life and important conflicts between public and private interests and between short-term and long-term interests. Details of the format, content and preliminary testing of the game are included. The testing of the game is described. It is shown that over a six week period the game was played on twelve different occasions by fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh formers and adults. A detailed report on each test is included. The game is evaluated. It is found to function satisfactorily and to meet its objectives.
