Abstract
The purpose of this work is to examine suitable plant species for both commercial and ornamental shelter in the Northern Wairoa area. An effective evaluation depends on correlating the results of the two main sources of information: 1) Research on individual tree species gleaned from existing publications, and· 2) The effect of the local environment on these species. This paper is in three parts; the first describes the area and outlines possible uses for shelter. Shelter species arranged in alphabetical order are evaluated under separate ornamental and commercial sections in parts two and three. It is hoped that the information gathered in this paper will be of assistance to those wanting to plant trees
