Abstract
This dissertation looks generally at avalanche rescue practices both in New Zealand and overseas. It aims to demonstrate the necessity for such practices and establish a background from which the main part of this work - Part 2- An Avalanche Emergency Plan for Broken River is based upon. It describes in detail the planning process involved in producing the draft plan, and makes recommendations for its implementation . A discussion is also provided of the encompassing legislation and low appreciation of avalanche danger as reasons that underly the absence of such practices on some New Zealand skifields to date.
