Abstract
Lincoln University is New Zealand's specialty land-based university
nestled in a rural area outside of Christchurch. Multi-use cycle paths
dissipate outside the jurisdiction of Christchurch requiring Lincoln-bound
cyclists to share narrow roads with motorists. The only cycle path linking
Christchurch to Lincoln is considered unsafe and too lengthy for daily
cycle commuters. Researchers purport however, that with several minor
improvements, bicycling can be a legitimate, safe, and efficient mode
of transportation to and from Lincoln University, particularly when
combined with the Metro bus network. This research proposal aims to:
A. Propose a Bicycle Action Plan to retrofit Lincoln University campus to
be bicycle friendly.
B. Cooperate with Selwyn District Council Transportation, Road Safety,
and Community Recreation Departments to discuss opportunities to
improve access and safety for cycle commuters and recreational riders.
C. Conduct cycling research to assess the mental and physical changes to
health during a one month bicycle commuting intervention for staff and students over the course of 2 months.
