Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to present an overview of recreation provision in psychiatric institutions. It will be presented in two main sections: 1. A review of available literature. 2. A survey of current trends and attitudes in Christchurch institutions. At present there is very little information related to this area. I hope this paper can provide a base for greater research and development of ideas. In my opinion, recreation has an as yet unrealized potential in the therapeutic process.
