Abstract

Defining 'landscape values' is not a simple matter. It is commonly assumed that every person knows what landscape values are, and that everyone has the same understanding about them. Since neither of these assumptions is correct, it is no wonder that discussion involving landscape values produces confusion and conflict. People often do not recognise that they are talking about different issues while using the same term.

Discussion about landscape values has led to several attempts at definition. Essentially, definitions fall into two broad groups 'separatist' and 'integrated' approaches. The former approach looks at value groups separately, while the latter recognises the interplay between them.
