Abstract
The study of an implemented tree planting programme describes an active policy of tree planting throughout the city by the WCC Parks and Recreation Department since 1979. The programme encompasses planting in streets, sports fields, around Council rental accommodation, children's' play lots and container use. Its objective is to provide Wellington with a theme of suitable and potentially notable major trees which, beyond the town belts, it is at present lacking.
Much of the information presented in this thesis is based on experience with street tree planting, in response to D.D. Rowe's 1981 NOH thesis 11 An Analysis of Street Trees in the Wellington Area". However, the principles of planting and maintenance are applicable throughout the spectrum of tree planting activities. It is the deliberate intention of my thesis to concentrate on the practical aspects of planning planting and maintenance which have been undertaken over the last six years. The programme described is confined to within the boundaries of Wellington city itself rather than dealing with the greater agglomeration of cities and boroughs comprising the Wellington district.
