Abstract
With the beginning of my career in Parks and Recreation in 1966 I was introduced to many varied tasks, one o f which was to plant a few dozen native trees and shrubs on a small section of stopbank near the Waipoua river. At that time the area was a wilderness f willow, broom, blackberry, travellers joy, and long grass. The area had also become popular for dumping of industrial and household refuse. Work has continued annually with small pockets being cleared and planted, with water pipe lines being laid where practical. Today the vision of some fifteen years ago is turning to a reality as several thousand native plants are now established and begin to have a desirable effect on the landscape along the riverside and in many parts of suburban Masterton.
