Abstract
The potential benefits of four Plant and Food Research (PFR) projects/programmes have been evaluated by the AERU at Lincoln University in 2016. They represent four of PFR’s five areas of strategic focus including:
Breeding and Genomics: The forage cereal breeding programme, which is operated under an agreement between PFR and Agricom (a subsidiary of PGWW) in order to breed specialist forage cereals for greenfeed and silage;
Sustainable Production: The development of crop scheduling tools and management guidelines to increase the sustainability and competitiveness of the beetroot industry, which has recently undergone very large-scale expansion in Hawke’s Bay;
Proprietary Foods: Research to develop in-depth understanding of appetite control mechanisms; identify natural foods and ingredients that assist in appetite control; and to develop fresh and processed foods for this purpose;
Residue-free: The development, modification and performance checking of highpressure washing systems (HPW) as a phytosanitary measure for New Zealand’s fruit export industries
