Abstract
Project and client: Manaaki Whenua – Landcare Research (MWLR) was contracted by the Department of Conservation (ref. DOCCM-6397507) to identify and test appropriate lures, trap aperture sizes and toxins to aid the control of hedgehogs in conservation predator control programmes in New Zealand. This report addresses the first two research needs and describes work carried out in collaboration with Lincoln University to support an author’s (BG) Master’s thesis requirements. Objectives: The objective of this study was to find effective lures to use in traps and to determine whether trap box entry holes exclude large hedgehogs by investigating: • which lure(s) are most effective in attracting hedgehogs? • what trap box aperture sizes ensure no large hedgehogs are excluded from traps?
