Abstract
Although vegetables have been grown in New Zealand since the earliest days of settlement, progress in providing varieties which are well adapted to local conditions has been slow and disappointing. This is especially the case with the Brassica crops, including Savoy cabbage. An appreciation of the conditions which have led to this slow rate of improvement is an aid in drawing up a programme for the production of more suitable material. Equally important is a thorough understanding of the requirements of both producers and consumers. A convenient starting point in any such programme is the comparison of existing commercial lines in variety trials. To be fully effective, evaluation of material in such trials should be based on methods which have been subjected to critical examination.
