Abstract
Recent legislative changes in the Local Government Act have placed a greater importance on asset management. The assets of Local Government Authority's constitute a reasonable proportion of their total assets and their management is gaining in importance. An empirical survey was done of the local authority's in the Environment Waikato Region to discover how Property Management was seen and done in the Local Authority's. The regional survey was based on earlier work done in larger organisations and public sector organisations to see if the same trends applied. The survey concluded that Property Management did not have the same status as other asset managers and in some cases did not even achieve the basic requirements of good property management practice.
