Abstract
This thesis reports a qualitative interpretive study of the meanings ascribed to urban parks by older people. The study traces the development of urban parks from early civilisations to the present day. The English influences that shaped the development of the city of Christchurch and its open space areas are described. Particular attention is focused on Jellie Park, Christchurch, and the way that it has changed over the thirty-three years of its existence. Urban parks are identified as having four sets of meanings for older people. These are associated with feelings toward family, recreation, nature and personal safety. These conclusions have been reached using qualitative methods, particularly intensive interviews with older park users, park neighbours and relevant members of the City Council and Jellie Park management staff.
