Abstract
The area I have chosen to cover in this paper includes a portion of the estuary on the east side of the waterway, stretching from Stead Street Bridge to the Sewage Treatment Station at Clifton.
This area (see the following three pages) is close to the city and does not appear to have a specified management plan that takes into account its special properties and needs. Management seems to fall under the jurisdiction of the City Engineer, so it is my hope that this document may be of some use to him and to those who assist him.
I wish to record my thanks to the City Engineer, Mr Gary Goodman, and his department for the assistance given. Thanks also to the many community‑minded people who offered their opinions, their time, and their documents to assist me in my preparation.
I must also record my thanks to Mr G.A.R. Petrie, NDH, who reinforced my enthusiasm for the estuary and helped me recognise its possibilities. I have been greatly honoured to have Ron as my thesis adviser.
