Abstract
The Shared Home Ownership Scheme currently operated by the New Zealand Society for the Intellectually Disabled Incorporated (IHC) is particularly cumbersome, very difficult to administer and, over the years, has not been well managed. The research for this dissertation explores the history of the IHC, and responsibility for the provision of services for the Intellectually Disabled and their placement in society. It also investigates alternative forms of occupation/tenure, which are presented as possible solutions to overcome the present Shared Home Ownership Scheme's disadvantages to both IHC and their clients.
