Abstract
So often we travel through small towns like Ashburton and unaware of the reasons behind their existence, or of any special points of interest within the area. Historic buildings or sites are not always 'sights' of a kind some travellers expect them to be, but behind the facade there is always a story to be told.
Therefore, some kind of explanatory pamphlet or visitor's guide is necessary to help one gain some understanding and appreciation of the place they are visiting. With this in mind, this report has been prepared as a source of information and guidance for the potential visitor to Ashburton.
Emphasis has been placed on discovering features of Ashburton that are, or were, important in the town's development. Taking these features into consideration, a
'visitors guide' has been compiled as an urban walkway around Ashburton. This potential walkway would systematically link and enhance Ashburton's historical buildings and sites, buildings of architectural interest, agricultural facets, significant monuments and public open spaces. All these features have been compiled in a guide which would lead to a greater appreciation and enjoyment of these assets, while also encouraging visitors to view them while on their travels.
