Abstract
Sustainability is fundamental for the long-term provision of transport fuels in New Zealand. The concept of sustainability is examined, and related to the planning and implementation of a particular energy option. The option considered is energy forestry in the South Island hill and high country. A series of key issues are discussed and possible objectives outlined. The goals and objectives are then related to policy, and a possible implementation strategy is indicated. The intention of the study is to examine some of the practical difficulties with implementing a sustainable energy option in New Zealand.
