Abstract
The Cheviot Hills Station has been occupied for well over 115 years by Europeans. The changes during the evolution of this station have developed the potential of the site and retained a close relationship throughout the landscape. Within this landscape, the homestead site and its plantings were developed and today are a significant feature in the Cheviot basin. The homestead site was once the centre of a large property but since the subdivision of the 1890's, its role has changed several times. Today it is being maintained as a domain under the Cheviot Domain Board. Plantations and ornamental plantings are approaching maturity in many cases, and proposals are required for the future use and development of this site. As a preliminary to these proposals a study of the historical importance of the site, its plantings and its associations, on both the local and regional scale is necessary. When these studies are complete, development proposals which take into account these historical assets, are to be made for the "National Trust for Places of Historic Interest".
