Abstract
Design as a research method remains contested, and there is a challenge to shift from the dominant positivist paradigm into one which re-recognises the co-dependency of creativity and knowledge. Measures of research relevance and quality are inclined to over-emphasise conventional science-based research, in turn diminishing creative approaches to research. We argue it is not either/or, but that design-directed research adopts tools from science (including the very notion of a lab), at the same time as recognising the generative potential of design. Landscope DesignLab is a setting for design-directed research, emphasising the fruitfulness of ideational approaches and collaborative research. Research findings are communicated in compelling ways, validating the value of the new knowledge produced, and ensuring it is accessible to a wide range of other disciplines, professionals and stakeholders.
