Abstract
There is, at present, considerable interest in a proposed irrigation scheme involving 20 properties on a lower terrace of the Rakaia River, an area where the production is severely limited by drought. There is potential to irrigate a total area of 3680ha.
The purpose of this study is to consider the feasibility of irrigation for one of the properties which would be involved.
The case study property, covering 317ha, is located on two river terraces on the northern side of the Rakaia River in the Te Pirita district. The property consists of two blocks with corners adjacent. Both the 184ha block and the 133ha block have areas of the lower terrace and areas of an upper terrace. The tenure is L.I.P. for both blocks.
The property is 12km from Rakaia, the nearest service centre, 28km north of Ashburton, and 58km south of Christchurch.
