Abstract
In recent years, the National beef herd has expanded rapidly* as graziers capitalize on investments made in land clearing and pasture improvement. But, while production per acre may have been raised, little progress has been made in herd improvement. Investigations of the genetic and economic properties of the characteristic "growth rate (rate of gain) in beef cattle" indicate that profitable gains may be expected in many commercial herds through simple mass selection. A brief review of research into these properties follows.
