Abstract
The Corriedale is the second most numerous sheep breed in the world. The breed originated in New Zealand (the world's third largest wool producing country) where it comprises only 6% of that country's present sheep population. But it comprises 80% of the sheep population of Uruguay (the world's fifth largest wool producer). This review concentrates on aspects of the development of the breed, the formation of breed societies in these two countries, the role of the World Corriedale Conferences and their influence on the breed. It briefly comments on social aspects and outlines management factors associated with the breed in each country. The compiler's interest in the topic results from his family involvement in Corriedale breeding in Uruguay and his tertiary education in New Zealand.
