Abstract
"Grafting is the art of joining parts of plants together in such a manner that they will unite and continue their growth as one plant".
Judging by the above statement, grafting is a·simple operation. Yet in New Zealand, it appears that no one nursery has undertaken to consistently produce in quantity, the variety of grafted plants for which there is a ready market.
Seeing the need and having the opportunity to investigate grafting under New Zealand conditions, I have undertaken to investigate methods of grafting to ensure on demand a regular supply of grafted ornamental plants, in the numbers and varieties that are readily marketable.
I have also attempted to see whether or not it is a feasible proposition to operate a grafting unit meeting such demands, from within a general nursery, using facilities (in buildings, stock and staff) available.
Before I deal with my practical work I will briefly discuss the theoretical aspects of grafting.
