Abstract
An investigation into changes in Pakeha funerals over the last century. An historical case study of the Ellesmere district concludes that death practices were based around the home until the 1960's. Qualitative research is based on interviews with Christchurch funeral directors and clergy about more recent changes in funerals. Contemporary trends are increasing personalisation and participation in funerals and funeral preparations. The dominance of the church funeral has been challenged by the alternative offered by funeral celebrants. Attitudes and funeral rites alter in response to how death is experienced. New rites evolve as personal and community values change.
