Abstract
Poor soil conditions have been suspected of limiting pasture production on the Lincoln University Dairy Farm. In particular poor drainage and aeration are thought to have restricted plant growth. Stock grazing activity has also been affected during wet periods. A review of the literature indicated that drainage could improve soil conditions. Measurements were therefore made of the infiltration rate, bulk density, porosity, and hydraulic conductivity of the soils. Results showed that soil physical conditions and drainage status was poor. The recommendations of this study are that the existing drains should be repaired, and that new mole drains should be pulled.
