Abstract
New Zealand's economy relies on the export of agriculturally based products. In areas such as Central Otago, Mackenzie Country, mid Canterbury and Kaikoura {inland) as well as some North Island areas, the ability to produce these agricultural products is being reduced by the increasing problem of rabbit infestation. The cure to the rabbit problem is seen by farmers in these infested areas as being the introduction of myxomatosis. This dissertation is concerned with the proposal to introduce the myxoma virus and a suitable vector for spreading the disease. The history of the rabbit in New Zealand is reviewed. The methods of control now available are discussed and the possible side effects, are considered. As a result of the consideration outlined above I have reached certain conclusions. These conclusions are detailed in the final section of the dissertation.
