Abstract
The model of the studio as a mode of teaching is one that is very familiar to design disciplines. 'The studio' is both a physical space and a conceptual space - it is a place for education, and a way of educating. The core of studio teaching is a collaborative setting, where the mode of learning is immersive and interactive. Collaboration happens in a range of ways, including between the students, between students and staff (as with a recent design workshop held at the SoLA), between different disciplinary groups (as in the 48 Hour Challenge hosted in the SoLA), between different parts of the university, and between different universities nationally (Summer Studio), and internationally (Collaborative MLA). The studio is a place for collaborative learning and for research, as in the notion of the Design Lab recently developed at the SoLA.
