Abstract
This special project discusses the various aspects of the provision of a picnic ground, rest area and interpretation guide, as well as design for a recreation area on land adjacent to the Hapuawhenua Viaduct in Tongariro National Park. The old viaduct is becoming popular for many New Zealanders as a new recreation area. This project therefore highlights the importance of the viaduct and its future utilisation and development as an active recreation area. The proposed picnic area provides a good quality of leisure and recreation activities. The area will also play an important role for interpretation of Tongariro National Park, the historical walkway between Ohakune township and the viaduct and the history of the Hapuawhenua Viaduct.
