Abstract
This handbook is a first attempt at bringing together horticultural information for use by management students. Much of the material has been compiled by students and is far from complete. The information will be revised at regular intervals and in the process new data and more accurate figures will be included.
There is a serious lack of detailed horticultural management data available in New Zealand. The widespread nature of New Zealand horticulture makes the keeping of details and calculation of standards an extremely complex proposition. There are some who feel that it is so complicated that the lack of accuracy of the data once collected will limit its usefulness.
Provided records are kept with a purpose and a degree of responsibility, any compilation of such data is bound to improve the present situation. It will allow a sound approach to the new science of management in New Zealand horticulture and provide a firmer basis for planning and analysis.
The miscellaneous data collected in this handbook has been taken from a variety of sources including the Department of Agriculture, the Apple and Pear Marketing Board, the Fruitgrowers' Federation, private firms, and Lincoln College publications. In addition sections have been extracted from various overseas publications in order to demonstrate the type of information which has been compiled in other countries.
