Abstract
The sustainable management of ecological resources requires conservation
efforts that not only protect against habitat loss but also link stakeholder incentives to the process itself. One means of achieving this is through integrated conservation and development projects (McShane and Wells, 2004).
In such settings, the idea is that linkages are made between the protection of
the environment on the one hand, and opportunities for income generation
and sustainable livelihoods on the other. a particular aspect of such projects
is that they are bottom-up in nature, providing diversified options for empowered local groups to manage natural resources (Hughes and Flintan, 2001).
