Abstract
The soybean is an important crop plant both in China, where it has a long history, and in the United States, where its history is comparatively brief. It is a plant with intriguing characters; it is a short-season crop, responsive to photoperiod, with the nitrogen nutrition of a legume; its seed is rich both in protein and oil, with uses more diverse than most grains.
