Abstract
Development of the agricultural sector is essential for economic and social development in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Improving the efficiency of the agricultural extension services in PNG by training and education of extension officers is very important in developing the agricultural sector. Highlands Agricultural College (HAC) provides a post certificate diploma course (FCD) for field extension officers. This dissertation addresses the subjects, 'Extension and Rural Sociology' and 'Agricultural Project Management' taught at HAC. Literature on adult learning, active learning, problem based learning and experimental learning is reviewed. A survey of HAC students on the subjects, 'Extension and Rural Sociology' and 'Agricultural Project Management' is described. The survey was carried out to give background information on the students. The survey also identified the teaching and assessment methods found most useful by the students and how useful the topics within the subjects were to the students. Results from the research survey and the literature review were used as a guide in preparing a Teaching Manual for the two subjects which is included in the appendices. Student notes for the two subjects were also prepared and included in the appendices. It was concluded that HAC students have a large amount of field experience, therefore, their learning should be field orientated and use this experience. Their learning should be problem centred and actively involve them in group discussions, tutorials etc. Lecturers teaching these two subjects should include teaching methods that are more relevant to adult students.
