Abstract
Collaborative approaches to addressing the wicked problems associated with water resource management in New Zealand are now widespread. Practice varies hugely and there are multiple efforts to facilitate dialogue within the courageous conversations space then leading toward actions. This paper summarises insights and challenges gained by 10 years of experience within the Hurunui-Waiau Zone in Canterbury, New Zealand – from being a committee participant and from being a researcher looking across similar attempts in New Zealand and in Australia. No one size fits all, context is vital, and relationship development fundamental. Frustrations include the ever changing policy and institutional environment and a ‘we know best’ attitude from some central and local government officials.
