Abstract
The vulnerability of the New Zealand farmer to shortages in the supply of petroleum fuels has been highlighted in recent months by the enforcement of restrictions on supplies of aviation gasoline and diesel fuel to the farming sector. There is now widespread recognition of the urgent need to lessen this vulnerability in a manner which gives due regard to the role of farming in the New Zealand economy, and which promotes the development of farming methods that are sustainable in the long term.
