Abstract
Effects of rate and time of applications of N on the yield components o:f main-stem ears o:f standard height CV. Kopara wheat were studied from a large field experiment. Nitrogen was fertilized at 5 rates at the onset of tillering ( 0-200 kg/ha) and during spike let growth ( 0-200 kg/ha). Nitrogen applied at tillering increased the mean numbers of spikelets per ear whereas N applied at spikelet growth had no significant effect. Grain number per spikelet and its
effect on grain number per ear were tended to be reduced by early applications of N. Late applications of N tended to improve grain set significantly in spikelets and consequently increased the grain number per ear.
