Abstract
Anaerobic digestion is a promising technology for processing waste poultry manure. There are three useful products - methane (fuel), effluent (fertiliser), and carbon dioxide. Environmental problems associated with current manure disposal practices are reduced. Sale of digestion products can provide additional income for poultry farmers. Widespread use of anaerobic digestion may also be of national benefit; its full potential within the New Zealand poultry industry is considered. Despite its apparent advantages, this technology is used by relatively few poultry farmers. The reasons for this are identified and means of overcoming these barriers explored.
