Abstract
The development of contemporary pest control is briefly reviewed and the use of deterministic economic decision analysis techniques identified as a major source of problems in pest control. Three approaches to modern pest control are stated. These are the chemical-technological approach, the applied biological solution, and trans-scientific pest control. Trans-scientific pest control is accepted as the most appropriate. Integrated pest management is placed in the transcientific pest control context and applied to the Tasmanian Grass Grub (Aphodius tasmaniae Hope) in Canterbury. Recommendations for the control of A. tasmaniae are made. The future of integrated pest management in pasture pest control in New Zealand is commented on.
