Abstract
The Avon River is Christchurch’s central landscape feature. Water is potentially exciting, refreshing and organic and can meet many human psychological needs in the synthetic city. As a natural feature in a landscape largely dominated by the built components, the river is a unifying element, a refreshing contrast to the rigid formality of the city street pattern. The magnetic attraction of water cannot be denied; water stimulates the senses and is a powerful social force.
