Abstract
The project arose from our experiences with stock scales when we were asked by the Tussock Grasslands and Mountain Lands Institute in 1971 to assist them evaluate stock scales then on the market. Two of the conclusions reached during this evaluation related to the reliability of animal weight as recorded by the operator. The lack of adequate damping on many scales made consistent weighings difficult, and accuracy, even to the degree considered sufficient for animal weighing, was sometimes suspect because of the way in which the scale had been built.
