The Waihora Walkway: a case of wetlands appreciation

Abstract

A major aim of this study is to identify several important management priorities for the establishment of the 'Waihora' walkway. The management priorities spelt out in Chapter 2 of this study, are seen as essential components for the establishment of the proposed walkway and for making it a successful proposition. It is hoped that this study may go some way towards acting as an incentive for the District Walkways Committee in making the 'Waihora' walkway a reality! The bulk of the study is taken up in the presentation of a resource base of the 'Waihora' area. It is anticipated that this information will be useful to individuals and organisations who may be interested in the walkway proposal and/or the human and natural history aspects of the area. It is intended that this resource information will act as a base for the provision of interpretative information on the proposed walkway. This would probably be in the form of interpretative facilities on the walkway and a self-interpretative pamphlet, or booklet, which should assist potential walkway users in gaining a more comprehensive appreciation of the Ellesmere area.
