Abstract
New Zealand, as per many countries, is experiencing unprecedented growth in international tourism. This growth is contributing to a range of issues including crowding at a few places. While some recommend a focus on dispersal to address these issues, it is argued here that a wider consideration of sustainability is required and that integrated initiatives need to occur at place, region and nationally. A simple tool, based on before and after consideration of six key indicators, represented by a spider diagram, is proposed as one contribution to this thinking.
