The application of social learning theory and innovation diffusion to cleaner production programmes and their uptake in small and medium size enterprises : A dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Applied Science at Lincoln University
Abstract
The growing issue of waste management is a concern in many parts of the world. One efficient way of reducing this waste is through the application of Cleaner Production programmes which are aimed reduction rather than disposal. As these programmes have been slow to diffuse, there is a need to look at ways to help enhance their diffusion.
The primary aim of this research was to provide local data from which Cleaner Production diffusion can be analysed and improved in light of Social Learning Theory and Innovation Diffusion. Using the Christchurch City Council's 'Green Retail' programme as a case study, the theory was applied in an attempt to enhance the diffusion and adoption of Cleaner Production programmes.
This application of Social Learning Theory and Innovation Diffusion has provided some cogent insights into Cleaner Production and its diffusion. The study clearly indicates there is a need for (i) enhanced public awareness concerning waste management processes (ii) the maintenance of adequate support for those implementing Cleaner Production and (iii) the need for more research in this area. Although suggestive rather than conclusive, this work provides a clear direction for future trialing and research.... [Show full abstract]
