The cold-chain: An operational specific refrigerated container transport review-conducted for P&O Nedlloyd : A dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Applied Science at Lincoln University

    McColgan, Martyn David
    Abstract
The effective transportation of chilled and frozen cargo is traditionally of major importance to New Zealand's export sector. The continued significance of this trade is emphasized by P&O Nedlloyd through pending major investment in the form of a new-build refrigerated container and vessel fleet. This purpose of this report is to assist in gaining the greatest possible efficiency and value from such new build assets. To gain an in-depth understanding of the refrigerated container transport process ('the cold-chain'), sample containers were tracked from pack point to their final destination in the United Kingdom. All details regarding process / actions incurred by the sample containers were recorded and analysed. Data obtained has been utilised to determine specific points within the cold chain that pose the most risk to cargo, and hence possible 'supply chain' improvements. Research has shown that the effective management of the cold-chain process is both complex and time consuming. The processes involved require constant monitoring and improvement and are heavily reliant on the information processes / structure within. Recommendations include a more effective utilisation of information obtained by various departments within the organisation to highlight any operational / system inefficiencies....
