Abstract
Summary It is important for increased efficiency in park maintenance that any advanced technical information available that can reduce cost, together with maintaining or improving the aesthetic appearance and functional response, be studied and applied accordingly. One high cost problem that is becoming even more evident with the ever increasing cost of labour and materials, is the suppression and eradication of unwanted vegetation. The need for more efficient weed control and the appropriate use of more efficient herbicides in their control, forms the base for this report. Observations show that herbicides are not widely used in park situations and certainly are not utilised to the same extent as in agriculture and in industry. The market for herbicides in parks is a secondary one, and has not yet been fully exploited. There are, however, many uses that warrant the application of current cropland and non cropland herbicides in park situations. This report is an endeavour to stimulate interest in the full exploitation of herbicides for use in as many park situations as economically a·nd environmentally possible. Special reference to treatments performed on the Lincoln College Grounds, and treatments especially suited to development and maintenance activities on the grounds, are given.
