Abstract
The main purpose of this study is to provide a tool for interpreting the agricultural landscape. The objectives pursued concentrate on the historical development of both the New Zealand and English agricultural landscape, in the context of technological change. Knowledge of landscape development in England is important, as many New Zealand settlers were English, thus English farming traditions have had an important influence on the agricultural landscape of New Zealand.
