Abstract

We hope the chapters of this book have illustrated to you the complex nature of Alzheimer’s disease and some of the other age-associated neurological diseases. The sheer number of scientific papers published that relate to treatments and remedies for neurological diseases, as well as articles which appear in the popular press, together with the attention of the media in general to new discoveries in the field, highlight the fact that these illnesses are of great concern to the public as well as to public health departments. The impending escalation in public health costs due to increases in the number of people around the world with these neurodegenerative conditions, particularly Alzheimer’s disease, and the lack of success of Alzheimer’s-related drug trials over the past three decades, is driving further research into potential preventative treatments and lifestyle changes.
