Abstract
This project discusses the complex topic of urban sustainability. I apply an IEM framework to determine the factors which make some cities more sustainable than others. The first four chapters discuss urban sustainability in a general context. The information for these chapters principally comes from written sources. Chapter Five focuses on the New Zealand context of sustainable cities, with special reference to Christchurch. Information for this chapter was sourced from written material and people actively involved in projects that promote urban sustainability. Overall, while there are many positive initiatives both locally, and overseas, these are hamstrung by a lack of integration and coordination. It is important that resources are targeted towards creating cities that are beautiful, enriching, places in which to live; which have as little negative impact on both local and global ecosystems as possible.
